One common problem with a door opener is when you can hear the motor run but the door does not move. If you have a Craftsman, Liftmaster, Chamberlain or Accessmaster door opener (they're all the same internal parts as they are all made by Chamberlain) this usually is caused by the main drive gear, which is made out of nylon, wearing out. That would be the large white gear just to the right of center in the picture. The current price for replacing the gear set is $180. If all you hear is click, pause, click and the motor does not run, then it's probably the capacitor (round gray thing with blue and red wires attached in the bottom left corner of the picture).

Linear is another brand of door opener that is common in the greater Jacksonville market. They are a well built unit and only have a couple of age related problems. Linear has a nylon drive gear, much like the Chamberlain gear pictured above, that will eventually wear out. They also have a problem with the sprocket on the top that drives the chain wearing out if the installer tightened the chain too tight. Both of these things are fixable for a reasonable price AND the door opener is worth putting the money into.

If you have an older Genie screw drive door opener, the common problems are either the trolley or the coupler that ties the motor to the screw. Both of these are fixable. If you have a newer Genie garage door opener (if your house is less than 10 years old) I'm willing to replace it for you but the cost of any repair that requires parts exceeds the value of the door opener, in my opinion. This is because Genie redesigned their whole line and went from having two of the best units in the industry to making a bunch of short life builder grade stuff.

The least expensive way for you to get your garage door opener replaced with a quality unit is for you to go to Lowes, Home Depot, or Amazon and buy a Chamberlain Chain Drive or Belt Drive. Then have me install it. The ONLY door openers I am willing to install are Chamberlains. Any of their models are acceptable to me. I install a lot of these units and have had almost no warranty issues with any of them. The critical point when choosing which unit to actually purchase is what features you want to have included. You have a choice of one or two remotes, a keypad for outside the door that works like a remote but you have to put your personal code into it, a deluxe wall button or just a standard doorbell type of button, and do you want it to be WiFi ready so you can work it from your cell phone from anywhere in the world. All of these units have way more horsepower than it takes to open the garage door. The door opener will run between $160 and $500 depending on which one you pick. The most common unit I install is 3/4 HP Chamberlain belt drive door opener (model B4505T) with 2 remotes, a keypad, a deluxe wall button and WiFi capability which Home Depot (best price for the last couple of years, but worth checking around) is currently selling for $229 plus tax, so about $245 if you purchase it. I particularly like this unit because the belt and the motor, which includes the gears, are covered by a lifetime warranty. The belt WILL rot and the teeth will fall off in about 14 or 15 years, but you just call Chamberlain and they send you a new belt for free. I charge $200 to install the door opener (so a total of $445 if you purchase the recommended unit), and will do so according to the instructions (yeah, go ahead and laugh ladies, I actually have read the instructions). This price includes adjusting the springs if they need it. I am very meticulous about the way I install garage door openers because if the clearances and angles are not set up properly the door opener is capable of actually damaging the garage door. I can also supply the door opener, and typically use that same Chamberlain model B4505T, which will cost you a total of $495 installed, tax included.

Important: 8' tall doors need a Rail Extension Kit to go with the door opener.

The Rail Extension Kit sells for about $60 plus tax and must match the door opener you are buying as far as chain or belt drive.
